Letters from Brown to various correspondents, including Walter John Knewstub, Frederic Shields, George Frederick Watts, Frederick Stephens, the Brothers Dalziel, John Ruskin, and his daughter Lucy. The letters relate mainly to Brown's painting, with frequent mention of specific works: his stained-glass work for Morris & Co. and other firms; exhibitions in Liverpool, Manchester and Berlin; his personal affairs, and other matters. Occasional comments are furnished on the reception of his work, his idea of aesthetics, the work of contemporary British painters, including Arthur Hughes, William Davis, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, William Holman Hunt and Sir John Everett Millais, and fund raising for the Rossetti memorial. One of the letters is written on the verso of a letter received from Charles Etherington (1880).
